Seasonal Ideas and Information

April Seasonal Checklist

The following is a list of activities to consider for your April gardening:

  • Vegetables and Herbs - This month all of the warm-season vegetables can go into the garden. We have a great selection of vegetable and herb transplants as well as seeds. Watch for pests on your vegetable plants. Early detection and action means you can control pests before damage is significant and they are easier to control with less toxic options.
  • Perennials & Annuals - Our garden is in full bloom with every color of the rainbow! Continue planting your own warm-season flowering transplants or seeds.
  • Trees, Shrubs & Vines - Continue planting trees, shrubs and vines. Come in and let us help you select the right plants for your area. Visit the Texas A&M Forest Service site for a complete tree planting guide.
  • Fruits & Nuts - Fertilize new fruit plants about six weeks after planting or a couple of weeks after new growth begins. Stop in and shop our great selection of citrus trees: thornless Mexican lime, Meyers lemon, grapefruit, calamondin, and Republic of Texas orange. Beat the rising cost of limes and plant a lime tree, or give one as a gift!
  • Lawns & Groundcovers - After you have mowed your turf twice, it is time to fertilize. Use a product with a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio of nutrients. The rule is to apply 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn. There are several herbicide products available for treatment of dollarweed. We can help you select the one that is right for your lawn.

Ask for our newsletter special and purchase a bag of Medina Growin Green organic fertilizer in a 40 lb bag for only $19.99.

From our Landscape Architect
"Classic Series Flagstone Paving" by Janielle Guzinski

We are proud to say that our preferred paving stone has arrived in stock! It is great for stepping stone paths, solid walkways, and patios. We use this stone all around the island, but there are even more colors available than last year. We have four colors of sandstone and one of limestone available at the nursery. We even have one circle kit in Harvest, the most popular sandstone color.

This stone is different from standard flagstone because it is calibrated for thickness. That means every piece is the same thickness as all the others. As long as you level the ground underneath the pavers, they will end up level in the end. That significantly reduces the labor involved since there is no messing with trying to set stone of different thicknesses and have the finished product be level. That's a real help when y'all are doing it yourself.

We often use this product as stepping stones. We often set them in a gravel path, but they can also be set with mondo grass in between the stones. This stone might come in a variety of sizes per pallet, but that just increases the number of ways you can lay them.. We often use a regular pattern, but there are also irregular arrangements possible. It all depends on your personal style.

You can purchase the stone at the nursery or have our landscaping crew install it for you. If you purchase it to lay yourself, the stone comes in a set of 4 stones. The set includes one each of a 12"x12", 12"x24", 24"x24", and 24"x36" stone. The total for the each set of 4 is $130 for 13 square foot of stone. Of course, we can deliver it to your property so you don't have to drag stone from your cart to your car to the garden.
